Keith wrote this song a few years ago when thinking back on his time in Bath as a young man. The situation was fictitious but the feelings were very much of that time (the early 70's) and the description "I looked out across the city of light at the life that I had to undo" is the view you can see as you drive into Bath from the M4 motorway on the A36.
It's still a dangerous piece of road but an amazing view at night and one that greeted Keith many times when he was returning from gigs in the early hours of the morning. Seeing the city ablaze after dark, deserted roads (as they were in the 70's) was like a homecoming beacon
As a piece of music it is one of the most difficult in Keith's set as the constant 'rotating' finger pick in 3/4 is extremely difficult to execute. Getting the timing right is the hardest part!
Because the bottom string is tuned so low it is also a 'balancing act' getting the tuning just right as the 6th string tends to go sharp on any note that is barred.
